resource for the womyn of Oklahoma and beyond!

Tret Fure in Concert
In the early 70s, at a time when the music
industry wa5 particularly inaccessible to
women, Tret Fure was rewriting the rules.
At the age of 19, she toured and eventually
recorded with Spencer Davis. A short time
later, Tret Fure was working with the most
successful commercial bands of the decade:
Yes, Poco, and The J Geils Band.
After becoming one of the first women
sound engineers in the country, she left the
mainstream music scene and soon discovered the blossoming genre known as
Women's Music. Fure produced and engineered five of Cris Williamson's solo projects as well as the three releases they recorded as a duo: Postcards from Paradise,
Between the Covers and Radio Quiet.
Fure's acclaimed solo releases include
Terminal Hold, Edges of the Heart, Time
Turns the Moon, and Back Home, which
took both "Album of the Year" and "Single
of the Year" awards for 2001 from Outvoice Top 40. Whether it is her disarming
piano ballads or gorgeous love songs, Fure's
words transform inaccessible and complex
emotions into that which listeners can viscerally touch.

Join us for an evening of celebration with veteran women's music performer Tret
Fure and spoken word artist Lynnsey Weber. The night will also feature a silent
auction of women's art and a short program to honor past' board members and
volunteers.
Opening for Tret will be spoken word artist, Lynnsey Weber. Lynnsey has been slinging words since
she was a wee tot, all over her native state of Oklahoma and beyond. She has been a featured artist in
Living Arts of Tulsa, a guest performer at two
LadyFest festivals, a slam poet finalist, and a regular word-spitter at many other events!
Lynnsey also self produced and released one full
length CD, More Than This, and a second CD is in
the works. Her poetry is a melting pot of insight on
politics, relationships, and life in general. Her
work is fiery, provocative, powerful, and deeply
personal. It promises to awaken your heart and
incite a riot in your mind. No one leaves her shows
untouched.

GLBT Depression Bipolar Support
Group Reforming
Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) is refonning its
GLBT group. It will meet Mondays, 7:00-8:30 at The Church of the
Open Anns. The group is free of charge. Support groups foster
interpersonal support among people living with depression and
bipolar (BP) disorder. DBSA recognizes and strives to be sensitive
to the needs of the GLBT community and is sponsoring this group
in response.
More than 23 million Americans suffer from depression and 1%
of the population has BP disorder (or manic depression). DBSA
groups are a safe place that fosters a supportive, trusting, respectful, and non-judgmental atmosphere; within which people deal
with issues related to living with mood disorders.
Surveys show that more than 90% of DBSA support group
members report that they experience interpersonal support, help
with problems and crises, and a better understanding of medications and treatments. Through education about mood disorders,
members realize that these disorders are physical in nature, just
like diabetes or heart disease, and do not define the person.
Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance is the nation's largest
illness-specific grassroots organization in the US. They have more
than 1000 groups nationwide and 20 in Oklahoma (new groups
are being funned regularly). DBSA OK has a large resource library,
as well as educational brochures and pamphlets pertaining to multiple topics in mental health. The staff can also provide referrals to
other resources in the community. DBSA's Oklahoma City offices
are located at 5350 S. \Nestem, Suite 600. Visitors are welcome.
For more information call Heather at 634-4646.
Herland Book Club
II
The Herland Book club will not meet in November. The group's
next meeting will be at 7 pm on Monday, December 1st. The
book to be discussed will be The Passion ofArtemisia, by Susan
Vreeland. There are nine copies of this book in the Metropolitan
Library System and one at Herland. It is also available at mainstream bookstores in paperback.
The Passion ofArtemisia is a novel based upon the life of Artemisia Gentileschi, a contemporary of Galileo. It is beautifully
researched and is rich with casual detail of 17th Century Italy,
and its clothing, interiors, exteriors, monuments, churches, street
life, food, and customs. Artemisia was a remarl<able woman and
a wonderful artist. You can view her masterpieces in glorious
color at various sites on the Internet. Her nudes are exquisite.
Herland Hiking
The Herland Hiking Group will have its regular monthly outing to
Martin Nature Parl<, 5000 W. Memorial, at 10 am on Saturday,
Nov. 8th. There is also an optional coffee gathering beforehand

Groups Protest Love Won Out Conference
The Interfaith Diversity and Equality Alliance, OGLPC, and the Peace House organized a
rally near Bethany First Church of the Nazarene last month to oppose the Focus on the
Family's Love Won Out conference. Wayne Besen, author of Anything But Straight, spoke_
about the myth of the ex-gay movement at Church of the Open Arms following the rally.
In the one-day conference that tours the nation, FOF promotes the idea that homosexuality is treatable and preventable. Love Won Out, Exodus International, and People Can
Change are several of the right-wing Christian ministries dedicated to converting gays and
lesbians.
According to Besen, FOF does not tell the truth. Instead, conference participants "get
heavy doses of scientifically bankrupt theories and misleading information that conceals
the true failure rate of so-called reparative therapy.•
Focus on the Family was also in Oklahoma 1O years ago holding seminars to help rightwing conservatives push for an anti-gay initiative (similar to Colorado's Amendment 2) in
the state.
Senate passes ban on certain abortion procedures
For the first time since the Supreme Court legalized abortion in 1973, the US Senate has
imposed a ban on a procedure known medically as intact dilation and extraction and what
critics call "partial-birth abortion." President Bush has said he will sign the bill which lacks
a provision to permit the procedure even if necessary to protect the mother's health. A
similar bill was passed in the 104th and 105th Congress but was vetoed by President
Clinton.
Intact dilation and extraction refers to a late-term abortion technique in which labor is
artificially induced until the lower body of the fetus emerges. The head is then collapsed,
and the dead but intact fetus is delivered. Last year, roughly 2,200 partial-birth abortions,
or less than 1 percent of the total number of abortions, were performed, according to The
New York Times. Although rare, the procedures are performed for a variety of reasons
including a dead or badly malformed fetus or one with severe hydrocephalus or continu- .
ing the pregnancy would place the mother's health or life at severe risk.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecology opposes the legislation and
has issued a statement saying intact dilation and extraction "may be the best or most
appropriate procedure in a particular circumstance to save the life or preserve the health
of a woman, and only the doctor, in consultation with the patient, based upon the
woman's particular circumstances, can make this decision.·
NOW and other reproductive rights supporters are planning a March for Freedom of
Choice in Washington next April.
Ireland Dismissed as Chief of YWCA
Former NOW President, Patricia Ireland was fired after less than six months on the job as
the CEO of the YWCA Ireland's hiring had been opposed by right-wing conservative organizations. One such group, the Traditional Values Coalition, is being credited with forcing
Ireland's ouster. The anti-gay, anti-choice group called Ireland a pro-abortion liberal extremist and "a lifelong advocate of everything that most Christians oppose" and had asked Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy Thompson to cut federal funding to the

Iranian Activist Wins Nobel Prize
Shirin Ebadi, Iran's first female judge and a relatively
unknown lawyer-activist, has been awarded the Nobel
Peace Prize for 2003. As the founder of the Association for Support of Children's Rights in Iran, Ebadi has
advocated for women, children, and refugees, as well
as political dissidents. Ebadi has struggled to create
change from within an Islamic framework. As a result
of her work, Ebadi has frequently seen the inside of
Teheran's infamous prisons .
Ebadi notes that women are oppressed in Iran and
other Middle Eastern countries because of the cultural
aspect of "male dominance." Forced to resign as a
judge in 1979 because of the Islamic Revolution,
Ebadi's new international stature is considered a powerful tool to further women's equality and human
rights in general in Iran .
Although many doors remain closed, Iranian women
have made advances not seen in more heavilyrestricted Muslim nations such as Saudi Arabia. Muslim clerics have ceded ground on social issues and
earlier this month Iran's first female police officers
joined the force.
But many barriers still remain. A woman in Iran
still needs her husband's permission to work or travel
abroad, and a man's court testimony is considered
twice as important as a woman's. Some think that
laws reserving certain jobs for men could be challenged if Ebadi were to run for president of Iran in
